Midford, The Viaduct c.1870
Midford, The Viaduct c.1870

Through the second arch on the right can be seen the original wooden bridge carrying Twinhoe Lane over the canal. This bridge only lasted for a few years after the opening of the S&D in 1874. In 1880 the S&D Railway Committee . . . received a request to improve the wooden bridge on the road across the canal. The original bridge restricted passage of all but the lightest of traffic, and the railway Company was informed that an iron replacement would cost £500. The local Highway Board refused to take over the maintenance of either bridge or roadway unless the former was rebuilt!. This photo also pre-dates the building of the railway signal box and, possibly the station buildings. Panoramic Views by J J Dutton, showing the Somerset and Dorset railway viaduct and the Somersetshire Coal Canal Weighhouse. From a private collection of photographs from the 19th and early 20th Century.

Notice also how little remains of the fencing adjacent to the road (see page 18 of Ken Clews SCC&R book. Stop planks are stacked just to the left of the bridge and the towpath shows evidence of regular use. Panoramic Views by J J Dutton. . The canal is now filled in, the bridge still survives, but is barely visible in the curtilage of the house that now fills this spot. From a private collection of photographs from the 19th and early 20th Century.
